It’s been nearly six months since Brandon Johnson and Larry Snelling’s thugs in the CPD staged the police riot against the Behind Enemy Lines anti-protest. That police riot resulted in injuries and more than 70 arrests, including of several journalists. While Brandon Johnson was inside of the convention partying with B-List rappers and the butchers of Gaza, the people arrested at the BEL protest spent hours inside of police vans, before being held overnight in filthy jail cells. Of those arrested, nearly half had their charges dropped, simply because city and state prosecutors could not produce an arresting officer in court. A number of other defendants accepted plea deals that involved no fine or community service hours, a reflection of how ridiculous the charges were in the first place.
For the group of defendants who are insistent that it was right to protest the DNC and stand up to the party being held for Genocide Joe and Killer Kamala, city prosecutors are attempting a novel form of punishment: death by a thousand cuts. Most of the people who have refused to take any deals have been dragged into court at least 6 times on procedural matters, while the city prosecutors, who work directly for Brandon Johnson drag their feet on actually holding a trial. That has meant monthly court appearances, disruptions to normal life and work schedules, all while having charges hanging over their heads. Lawyers representing these defendants have been making it clear to City prosecutors since November that they are ready to go to trial and want their day in court. And now, with trial dates set, and out of town defendants booking travel, the city is once again trying to delay holding trials that they know they will lose.
Brandon Johnson talks a big game about being an anti-Trump progressive and (very rarely) talks about Palestine. At the same time he and the cowards who work for him are still prosecuting people for exposing the hypocritical rot at the heart of his political program: that when the rubber meats the road, he’ll always side with the ruling class.
With the city forcing DNC defendants to wait more than six months for their day in court, it’s important to step up the pressure on the city to drop all the charges on DNC defendants!
Call Brandon Johnson:
Call the City Law Department:
Drop the charges! It’s right to rebel against genocide!
