Stop the US-Israel War Machine!

In 1968, speaking out against the genocidal US war of aggression on Vietnam, Martin Luther King Jr. prophetically said that the greatest purveyor of violence in the world was his own government. Those words have become more true with every passing year, sealed in the blood of millions from Cambodia to Gaza, from Iraq to Chile.

Over the weekend, the international terrorists of the US ruling class unleashed another bombing campaign against the sovereign nation of Iran. Trump is reporting that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed. These attacks are an entirely unjust act of brutality and aggression.

Yet again, people who have been subjected to threats, blockades, sanctions, and sabotage by the US and Israel had to witness death from the air, as bombs and missiles landed in their cities, and on their homes, gripped with terror over whether they or their families would be next. Donald Trump likes to call himself the “President of Peace” while he launches acts of military aggression like they were video games, playing with people’s lives and livelihoods to juice his standings in the polls. Last night’s strikes hit an elementary girls’ school, killing at least 85 children. Trump has offered only the flimsiest justification for these strikes, making false claims about the Iranian nuclear program and claiming that the US was somehow acting in the interests of the Iranian people.

All of the thinly-veiled-bullshit claims of benevolence are, of course, bullshit, disproved by the long legacy of US imperialism in Iran and the entire region. In 1979, the Iranian people overthrew the hated US-backed monarch, the Shah. Since that time, the US has had Iran in its crosshairs, subjugating the country to sanctions, stalking the seas around its waters, assassinating its leaders, and supporting Israel in waves of aggression against it.

Whatever personality is at the top of the US empire, the imperialists are driven to discipline countries that oppose their plans, and especially to control the access and flow of key resources in the world, none more critical than oil. The target that Trump is placing on Iran has nothing to do with legitimate grievances that the Iranian people have with their government, and everything to do with the long-standing imperial ambitions to control the entire Middle East and North Africa.

By all appearances, the US seems to be hoping for a replay of the recent Venezuela intervention, achieving their aims by decapitating the Iranian leadership, rather than through an Iraq-style intervention (Although, Trump officials increasingly echo the rhetoric of the Bush administration in the lead-up to the Iraq War). This may change as events unfold. But what is already clear, is that, once again, if the US imperialists are not brought to heel they will continue to wage war on humanity itself.

The US was joined in these strikes by Israel, a country that every day invents new forms of depravity like the deliberate starvation of children as a weapon of war, detonating exploding pagers in a crowded Lebanese marketplace, and assassinating doctors from working hospitals.

The US and Israel cannot be allowed to determine the future. The people of the world must.
